7 Ways Entrepreneurs Drive Economic Development

Entrepreneurs create businesses, businesses create jobs and people with jobs make good customers. There’s been a lot of talk lately about the future of work. Much of the time, these conversations are fueled by the anxiety many of us share as we try to understand the impact new technologies will have on our industries. We tend to reduce these discussions to binary arguments -- how smart machines will do extraordinary things to improve our lives, or how this or that innovation will make human labor obsolete, creating a jobless dystopia. Both conclusions strike me as somewhat specious. It’s not that these concerns aren’t valid, but they oversimplify a more complex phenomenon. Why do entrepreneurship and innovation fuel economic growth? On the surface, the answer seems intuitive: entrepreneurs create businesses and new businesses create jobs, strengthen market competition and increase productivity. Here in the United States, entrepreneurism is part of our American identi...

Convention: APC Taunts PDP, says A Leopard Can’t Change its Spots

ABUJA: Despite its own inability to hold its national convention after series of postponements, the ruling All Progressives Congress APC Sunday in Abuja launched a frontal attack on the conduct of Saturday’s national convention of the opposition-Peoples Democratic Party PDP, describing it as a ruse. In a terse statement laced with sarcasm, the ruling party described the PDP as a leopard that is incapable of changing its spots, saying corruption is deeply rooted in its DNA. APC & PDP APC also added that the PDP has not departed from its evil ways especially due to its constant resort to using money to sway electoral support. “In reacting to revelations of how money-for-votes and systematic rigging was brazenly perpetuated during the National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP, the All Progressives Congress APC is mindful of the popular axiom: A leopard cannot change its spot”, the ruling party noted in a statement by its spokesperson, Mallam Bolaji A...

Biafra: We Do Not Support IPOB – British Government

The British government has opened up on the agitations for Biafra, Restructuring and the Indigenous people of Biafra( IPOB ) group, stating that they do not support IPOB or Secessionists. The British government maintains that it would not support any activity that will lead to the break-up of Nigeria. The British high commissioner to Nigeria, Paul Arkwright during a visit to Joy 109.1 FM in Jos, had this to say; “We are in favour of a united Nigeria; we do not support IPOB, we do not support secessionists. Equally, they have a right to be heard because the constitution provides for freedom of expression, even as restructuring is going to be a major factor in the 2019 elections. Although I do not know how exactly the restructuring will look like, I am sure that it is going to be a major determinant in the 2019 elections.”

A Truelove Story: My NYSC Teacher [Episode 1]

EPISODE 1 It is 5:30 am, 30mins to my final parole. This, I am told is my last day on earth. They said a team of Rev. Fathers are coming to preach to us – condemned prisoners, to pray for our souls, so at least we can make purgatory. There’s chain around my legs and hands, the chain whenever the draw it, peels my skin. On getting to the visiting room, they remove the chains. My fellow prisoners rush to their families with tears on their eyes. Saying their last good-byes, kissing their wives, touching their daughters and sons on the head. Telling them to be brave, the world is tough but they should struggle to survive. My eyes water – as if someone is peeling onions close to me. This is my last day in this world and there’s no one here for me. I am alone. The Rev. Father is here. His hair is white. He looks hungry, even closer to the grave than I am. He smiles as I take a seat. “My Son you look well” he says smiling. Is this a joke? Is he trying ...

Does Smoking Weed Make You More Creative?

A new study on the effects of smoking marijuana and its relation to creativity has some interesting results. The study consisted of 412 marijuana users (they couldn’t find 8 more?) and 309 non-users, and they attempted to answer the question: Does smoking marijuana make you more creative? Emily LaFrance, the co-author of the study and graduate student at Washington State University, says she first became interested in the topic when she noticed that a lot of her favorite artists admit they smoke marijuana. “This cannabis use was commonly thought to have been a cause of the creative success of many artists,” she explains. “I began to wonder about this commonly held idea – are cannabis users really more creative than non-users?” The study is called “Inspired by Mary Jane? Mechanisms underlying enhanced creativity in cannabis users” and was published in Consciousness and Cognition . It examined the participants over a variety of areas incl...
